Advice to help keep kiteboarding safe.

  • If you are not sailing, land the kite!  Do not play/jump on the beach where there are other beach users. This is a big problem in summer.
  • Do not jump/turn within 25m of the beach.- if the kite falls and hits a beach user or if they are cut by the lines it’s likely they’ll call the police and you will be denounced!

  • Never kite alone,- there should always be at least one other kiteboarder/windsurfer with you, or at the very least someone on the shore that knows you are kiting.
  • Never kite on unknown beaches before first talking to a local shop/school for advice.
  • Check your equipment before entering the water,- especially the state of the lines and de-power line.
  • Don't kite in offshore winds unless there is a rescue boat available.  Always pay attention to wind indicators (eg flags on the beach).
  • Respect other riders rights of way, and always show extra consideration to novices.  If jumping, check you have sufficient space and will not land in the path of another kiter.
  • Always use a kite leash or quick release system that prevents us losing contact with the kite.  When kiting far offshore the kite may be our best lifesaving/flotation device.
  • A rider entering the water always has preference over one coming into the shore.
  • If using a board leash always wear a helmet and impact vest.
  • Don't kite during thunderstorms.  The lines can act as conductors.
  • Don't begin kiting without undertaking an initiation course with a qualified instructor.  Kiteboarding can be dangerous and the majority of accidents involve beginners who undertake the sport without professional instruction.
  • Keep a safe distance from electrical cables and other Arial obstructions.
  • Choose a safe launching spot.  Always have a safe distance downwind. (about 35m).
  • Respect the areas designated as kitezones.
  • Don't launch or land the kite in areas where there are many people
  • All other beach users have preference.
  • When on the water, normal sailing rules apply.  eg. if two riders approach from opposite directions on the same line of travel, the rider with right hand forward has right of way.
  • When the kite is on the beach, use sand or some kind of weight to secure the kite.
  • Inflated kites should not be left unsupervised. Deflate it or weigh it down with sand to make it safe.

Respect other beach users!

Please remember what is mentioned here regarding jumping/turning on the shoreline and general beach safety.

Lack of care will lead to kites being banned during the summer months, when we can get most enjoyment from this fantastic sport!

The beaches and sea belong to everyone.
Keep them clean and safe!
